Sennheiser MD 421-II is a wired dynamic microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern and a five-position bass-control switch. It is used for instrument recording, live sound and broadcast applications. Its design combines a comparatively large microphone body with direct control over low-frequency response.
The cardioid pattern makes the front of the microphone the main pickup direction and reduces sound arriving from behind. Positioning the desired instrument in that main pickup area gives the engineer a practical starting point for source separation. A polar pattern does not remove the contribution of the room, neighbouring instruments or microphone distance.
